When most of us stop to consider how many hours a day we spend immersed in artificially lit spaces, the reality is somewhat unsettling. While it is possible for some folks to remain unaffected, more often than not, our sleep and our ability to focus inward are the price we pay for the modern convenience of electric lights, smart phones, and hours upon hours spent watching Netflix. In contrast, our ancestors lived in a world where the only light which entered their awareness came from the sun and from the fire they called down through the burning of wood or wax. We all come from people who were not afraid of the dark.
